The Public Establishments’ Role

Restaurants and other public establishments play a vital role in this project. The essence of the project, as conceived and begun in 2019, is for the shakers and accompanying table cards to be displayed on the tables of our restaurants and other public establishments as a public display of support for racial justice and harmony. The project was conceived as necessary to counter the recent increase in racist rhetoric and action, with the conviction that most Americans recognize racism as an insidious and destructive force and are eager to publicly reject racism and work toward racial justice and healing.

When the pandemic hit in 2000 and many restaurants and other public establishments closed, we pivoted to a focus more on retail sales and displays, but the essence of the project remains the same: promotion of the shakers as a symbol of support for an America that is thoroughly antiracist, with the shakers on display in public places throughout the country to show that most people support the vision of an antiracist America and are committed to work for true racial justice and harmony.
